The pH was found to be somewhere in the range of 6 and 7 in all the tests done * The manufacturers’ guarantee was the pH level of the sensodyne (toothpaste) was nonpartisan. My speculation was that the toothpaste was pH nonpartisan and this was upheld by the outcomes. * I looked at refined water and faucet water in view of the various synthetic concoctions blended in with the water, however the outcomes demonstrated no distinction so it didn’t influence the pH. The pH meter indicated small fluctuating however not all that much this could be that the pH meter is out or that there could be a major issue with the meter on the grounds that with my upheld proof its probably not going to not be right. To improve this investigation is test with more than one pH meter to check whether there’s a distinction in examination. Else it might be increasingly proficient if there were more tests accomplished for more help towards the outcome. * My free factor is the sensodyne (toothpaste) in light of the fact that in each examination I utilized a similar measure of sensodyne. The dependant variable was the pH levels were I didn't have power over what the pH level would demonstrate. This is the explanation the outcomes are solid since I rehashed the means multiple times in each test and kept on getting similar outcomes. This investigation could be improved by getting tests of toothpaste from an assortment of areas. This will distinguish and inconsistency’s in the item itself. End * The test found that the produces guarantee of pH is right and it is an impartial pH with upheld proof. Teeth would be influenced by acidic toothpaste or basic toothpaste. The Hawthorne Studies free essay sample

A New Direction General Electric, the major manufacturer of light bulbs, had preliminary evidence that better lighting of the work place improved worker productivity, but wanted to validate these findings to sell more light bulbs, especially to businesses. GE funded the National Research Council (NRC) of the National Academy of Sciences to conduct an impartial study. ATTs Western Electric Hawthorne plant located in Cicero, Illinois, was chosen as the laboratory. Beginning with this early test, the â€Å"Hawthorne Experiments† were a series of studies into worker productivity performed at the Cicero plant beginning in 1924 and ceasing in 1932. Illumination Studies, 1924 -1927 The earliest experiment (1924) was conducted by the NRC with engineers from MIT. The study would end in 1927 with the NRC abandoning the project. The group examined the relationship between light intensity and worker efficiency. The hypothesis was that greater illumination would yield higher productivity. Two work groups of female employees were selected for â€Å"control† and â€Å"experimental† groups. By comparing the changes on worker productivity by manipulating lighting in the experimental group with the production of the control group, the researchers could validate and measure the impact of lighting. The study, however, failed to find any simple relationship as poor lighting and improved lighting seemed in increase productivity. Indeed, in the final stage, when the group pretended to increase lighting the worker group reported higher satisfaction. The preliminary findings were that behavior is not merely physiological but also psychological. This was a break with the Scientific Management school that saw work productivity as â€Å"mechanical†, and led to the decision to learn more about worker behavior. George Pennock, Western Electric’s superintendent of inspection suggested that the reason for increased worker productivity was simply that the researchers interacted with the female employees; and, this was first time any one had shown an interest in the workers. Basically, the workers were trying to please the researchers by ontinuing to increase their output and report satisfaction in the study, no matter what the intervention was. Later, the phenomenon of a researcher corrupting an experiment simply by his presence would be termed the â€Å"Hawthorne effect†. Relay Assembly Test Room Experiments, 1927-1929 The NRC started an experiment to probe the unexpected findings of the Illumination study but would depart in 1927, at which time Western Electric continued the project drawing on support from Harvard researchers. An experimental group was established of five young women from the Relay Assembly room of the plant. The experiments involved the manipulation of a number of factors, to include pay incentives, length of workday and workweek, and use of rest periods, to measure impact on productivity and fatigue. Again, the relationship between pay, incentives, rest, and working hours seemed to have little effect on productivity, even when the original, more demanding conditions were re-implemented. Mica-Splitting Test group, 1928 – 1930 Disturbed by the inconclusive evidence that rewards and incentives improved worker performance, a second experiment was conducted to look only at this relationship using workers in the Mica-Splitting Room. In his experiment the workers’ piece wages were held constant while work conditions were varied. Productivity increased by about 15%. The researchers concluded that productivity was affected by non-pay considerations. Members of the research team began to develop the theory that social dynamics were the basis of worker performance. Plant-wide Interview program, 1928-1931 As early findings indicated that concern for workers and willingness to listen impacted productivity, Western Electric implemented a plant-wide survey of employees to record their concerns and grievances. From 1928 to 1930, 21,000 employees were interviewed. This data would support the research of the Harvard team for years and lead them to conclude that work improved when supervisors began to pay attention to employees, that work takes place in a social context in which work and non-work considerations are important, norms and groups matter to workers. Bank Wiring Observation group, 1931-1932 The final Hawthorne experiment was conducted studying 14 male workers assigned to the Bank Wiring factory. The objective was to study the dynamics of the group when incentive pay was introduced. The finding was that nothing happened! The work group had established a work â€Å"norm† – a shared expectation about how much work should be performed in a day and stuck to it, regardless of pay. The conclusion: informal groups operate in the work environment to manage behavior. Importance of the Hawthorne Plant Studies Despite modern criticism that the research was flawed and that incentives played a larger role in improving worker productivity than the Hawthorne plant researchers concluded. These studies changed the landscape of management from Taylor’s engineering approach to a social sciences approach. Worker productivity would, henceforth, be interpreted predominately in the United States in terms of social group dynamics, motivation, leadership, and â€Å"human relations†. The practice of management could not be the aloof technician of Taylor’s Scientific Management, designing the job, selecting and training the â€Å"right† worker, and rewarding for performance. The manager was an immediate part of the social system in which work is performed, responsible for leading, motivating, communicating, and designing the social milieu in which work takes place. The studies also developed the scholars that would continue to influence the American way of thinking about management at Harvard Business School and elsewhere. Included among these researchers were: Elton Mayo came to Harvard from Wharton where as a psychologist he had researched the impact of social and home life on worker performance. At the Harvard University School of Business his reputation led him to consult with the FBI and the movie industry. Mayo’s reporting of the Hawthorne experiments became the most influential in that he laid out a programmatic interpretation, which would be called the â€Å"Human Relations† approach that dominated management thinking until the 1950’s. Mayo’s views lead to the construction of manager as a leader supported by knowledge and skills to build social cooperation. Fritz Roethlisberger and W. J. Dickson were the first to publish comprehensive findings of the Hawthorne experiments in 1937 and authored Management and the Worker in 1939, a comprehensive statement of the research and findings. Roethlisberger, educated as an engineer, started the Harvard Industrial Research Department, was a lead researcher in the Hawthorne project and a leader in the Human Relations movement. Dickson was Chief of Employee Relations Research Department at the Hawthorne plant and an instrumental contributor to the project. W. Lloyd Warner, an anthropologist who designed the group experiments, pioneered the field of social anthropology at Chicago and Michigan. His work includes classics in the American class system and race. L. J. Henderson a chemist and physiologist in charge of the Fatigue Laboratory at the Harvard Business School provided a theoretical foundation to the research. He would contribute to the development of â€Å"systems theory†, influencing management theorists Chester Barnard and George Homans. He became the first president of the History of Science Society. This group of scholars permanently influenced the study of management and the development of Organizational Behavior as a discipline.

A Brief History of American Government essays

A Brief History of American Government essays Most Americans remembered and feared the harsh rule of the British king. It was cruel and unjust government. So, after the war the Articles of Confederation made it clear that the new government's power should not only be strong, but limited. It would prevent one man or one group from getting too much power. After the war, the people saw a need for a strong national government. At the same time, they did not want to take away all power from the states. This problem was solved by creating Federalism, which means that power is divided between the national government and the state governments. The people have the power to elect national and state officials. The national government has the power to deal with national issues. The states have the power over many local matters. As written in the Costitution, only the federal government can coin money or declare war. Also, it can regulate trade between states and with other countries. However, the states have the power over local governments and schools, to regulate trade within their borders, and they can decide who votes in state elections. Also, the Constitution says that powers not given to the federal government belong to the states. This happened to be a very useful law for the small states which fear federal government. Concurrent power s are shared by federal government and the states. It means that both can raise taxes, set up a system of courts, and the power to pass laws. In case of any dissagreements between the federal government and the states, the Constitution is the final authority. Also, to keep the government from becoming too powerful, the people came up with a new system called separation of powers. It meant creating three branches of government. Each branch would have its power. The first branch is called Legislative (Congress). It is made up of the House of Representatives and the Senate. Under the Constitution, voters in each state elect members of the House of Repr...

Lead like Jesus Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Lead like Jesus - Essay Example In fact, servant leadership involves the understanding of the various issues of selflessness and focus on the team and not the leader. However, self-focused and self-centeredness are issues present in humanity. In fact, individuals tend to focus on their success instead of the success of the team members or members of the community. Therefore, by nature, human beings tend to be focused on themselves and not others. In spite of the challenges of self-centeredness, when a person matures, he learns to understand that the world is not about how much one can get, but how much one can give to others. The concept of service to others is integral in the development of servant leadership, which is a concept developed by Jesus (Blanchard and Hodges 40). The concept revolves around caring for others and having love. Leaders motivated with self-interest tend to place their agendas, status, safety and gratification above those people they influence. In such cases, the leaders become self-serving and not serving leaders. Self-serving leaders view feedback as criticism and a threat to their leadership style (Blanchard and Hodges 41). They do not offer a chance for the members to contribute to the development of organization or team The heart of a servant leader involves being meek, humble and loving. The depiction of love in all issues undertaken including the disciplinary action will ensure harmony in the group. A servant leader must focus on the well-being of others and not him. Jesus in his servant leadership model employed the use of love in handling the diverse issues within the organization. In fact, in all his decisions, he considered the impact of the decisions on his members. For instance, he did not send Judas Iscariot away, but kept him close with other disciples (Blanchard and Hodges 38). The depiction of love to Judas was to help in developing his

It is one which completely changes the mind of the person -- a shift of personal belief happens. In America, crime rates are comparatively high due to the following factors: harsh sentencing laws and racial turmoil (Liptak, 2008). The harsh sentencing law connotes that if one is convicted of a certain offense in US, the offender could not in any way escape the minimum sentence as it is made mandatory. This goes to say that if one commits a crime, he or she will surely experience being incarcerated thereby adding to the number of offenders. Racial turmoil is seen as one of the reasons for the high crime rate as it has been observed that the American police authorities are more aggressive in arresting black offenders than the white ones (Anonymous, n.d.). Am erica is not alone in its enforcement of the death penalty despite the international pressure of abolishing it. China, Pakistan, Iraq and Sudan are some of the countries which also favor capital punishment (Anonymous, n.d.). Other countries are not implementing this type of penalty due to religious and humanitarian causes.

Someone Special Essay Example for Free

Someone Special Essay Those who truly know us for who we really are; are the people that have the most influence in our lives, such as our parents. In my case it is my mother who has greatly impacted my life. She has stood beside me through thick and thin. I know that as long as she is here on this earth, she will stand beside me to love and support me unconditionally as she has done all these years. It is because of her that I am the person I am today. Behind my choices, character, my values, and behind me, proudly stands my mother. All throughout my childhood I have been closer to my mom than I am to my father. She has been an amazing friend to me, but an even better parental figure. Laying down the rules for me and establishing boundaries when needed. It is the love and respect I have for my mother that I am cautious of the choices I make. I cherish her approval and fear of her disappointment. I feel confident that all the life lesions she has taught me and the advice she gives me, will continue to shape my standards and values in life. My mother raised my brother and I the way my grandmother raised her. I have been taught that honesty, integrity, hard work, and respect should be constituted into daily living, and to get what we want in life, we have to earn it. Read more:  Who is your admired person essay Although I wasn’t brought up in a life of splendor, I acknowledge that I live a comfortable lifestyle due to the hard work and effort my mother put into her life. Her perseverance is an example I want to follow. Coming from a large family with very little education and financial resources, she moved away from home with one goal in mind, and that was to make a better way of life for us. And that she did. With that, she was able to provide my brother and I the luxuries that others didn’t have. For that I am extremely grateful for. Now that I am old enough to understand that my mother was able to overcome adversity, and accomplish everything she has, inspires my every day to make myself a better person. I greatly admire her strength and strong will, and I am extremely proud to be her son. And in my mother’s words, one of her favorite quotes is: â€Å"we only get one chance to live our lives, so it is up to us to take what we have and move forward in life. Our future is not set in stone; we create the path of our own destiny.†

The Original Style of Jon Scieszka :: Biography Biographies Essays

The Original Style of Jon Scieszka Jon Scieszka has an original style that is all his own. Many of his books such as The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs, The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales, and The Frog Prince Continued have led several people to believe that he has created a new genre of children's literature: using unique perspectives to retell classic fairy tales. But what motivated Scieszka to become an author? And how does he come up with his innovative ideas? I will answer these questions by discussing Scieszka's many inspirations including his teaching career, students, and his family. Scieszka began his love for books early on in his life when he and his mother spent time together reading. It was during these times that one of his favorite authors emerged. Dr. Seuss stood out because "he was the first author that I realized was a different person - that there actually was a person who wrote the book" (Scieszka). It was then that he decided that creating books for others to read would be entertaining. He did not give this idea much thought until after he became an elementary teacher. That was when he reconsidered the idea of writing children's books. As a second grade teacher he learned many things about children including what kind of books they enjoyed and which ones did not even keep their attention. As Scieszka himself said, "...there's nothing more discriminating than a group of second graders sitting on the floor. And they'll tell you if they don't like it, or if it's boring, or if it's stupid, or if it doesn't make sense" (Scieszka). This helped to shape his ideas as to what would be interesting and fun for children to read. Students have done more than just inspire him to write. Many have helped give him ideas. In Math Curse after her teacher tells her that almost everything has math involved in it; the narrator discovers how true the statement is as her world explodes into a giant math problem. Scieszka credits this idea to some of his "less accomplished" students and how they perceive math (Scieszka). Another source for his ideas comes from within his own house. His own daughter has unknowingly inspired him on at least one occasion. When she was small she enjoyed the popular story of The Gingerbread Man. After an endless amount of times of rereading the story Scieszka wondered: What would happen if the lady ran out of gingerbread and had to make him out of something else? Behavioral Sciences

Economic status such as severe economic stress and unemployment is important to explore when a child protective service (CPS) worker tries to validate an abuse. The complexity of this area and its association with other factors makes it a significant field in the process of verification of the presence of child abuse. The economic constraints or poverty per se is not the direct cause of child abuse but rather the effects of it such as stress, substance abuse, domestic violence and depression(Index). An increase in the number of child abuses due to stress caused by poverty, unemployment, and economic decline is reported(Health24). Poverty and unemployment are considered as important risk dynamics in maltreatment of children(Congress of the United States 1988). Studies concluded that in families with low annual income the occurrence of severe or fatal injuries because of physical abuse and neglect is high(Neil Guterman, 2005). Unemployment can bring stress to the family resulting to chi ld abuse. The root of the stress in unemployment is money problem. When a parent loses a job the family will experience economic constraints and when interlinked with other factors this leads to child abuse. In child maltreatment, unemployment is considered as the most important forecaster of cases. Various studies done on the relation of unemployment and child abuse indicates that the incidence of child abuse increases proportionally with raises of unemployment cases(Congress of the United States 1988). Employed fathers are less likely to commit physical abuse to their children when compared to unemployed ones.Another study also resulted into the conclusion that the number of cases of maltreatment increases with the number of unemployed fathers. Hypothesis of researches indicates that fathers who lost there job tries to reinstate their provider persona through abuse in their children and any family member. Behavioral changes such as irritability, increased temper, and being tense ar e observed in fathers that has financial problems. These uncontrollable economic burdens tend to provoke the breakdown of a parent’s ability to regain control over the situation(Neil Guterman, 2005).It doesn’t mean though that child abuse only happens in poor households or communities. It has no social or economic boundaries but only with higher incidence in economically challenged families. There are also cases of child abuse that involves people with monetary capacity but those cases are in association with other factors like history of abuse, depression, and stress due to other factors. If I am a CPS worker I will explore the area first by getting the necessary historical information. Answers to questions such as who, what, when, where, how and why must be obtained(Justice, 2001 ).Interviews with the victim, the offender, and people in their environment will help in answering the aforementioned question(NY). Research should be done on the financial status of the fam ily including the employment status of the parents, the amount of annual income, the capacity to sustain the family’s needs through the income of parents, any family need that are not sustain due to income constraints, and any debts that will affect the economic standing of the family. After data gathering, the analysis of the obtained information is done. Association between the financial profile and child abuse is analyzed.Evidences of the abuse should be searched in order to be able to substantiate the claim of child abuse. Information can be acquired by interview with the alleged offenders, the child, and individuals that can give information about the case like neighbors, and family friends(NY). Interview with the parent(s) of the alleged victim is conducted. Then interview with the alleged victim is done in a private setting with the permission of the parents of course. A medical examination of the victim is done especially in cases of sever injuries and sexual abuse.Th e supposed place where the incident happened is examined and documented. Then the alleged victim is visited unannounced to identify the condition in the home. Individuals that can contribute substantial information about the case are also interviewed privately(Services, 2006). In investigation of child abuse cases credibility of evidence is defined as the likelihood that the information gathered is accurate. There are two types of evidence used in investigating the finding; and, these are the direct and indirect evidence.Statements of witnesses are classified as direct evidences, while the indirect evidences rely on the presence of existence or nonexistence of circumstantial facts(Network, 2007). The investigator in order to determine if the information that will be used as evidence, he needs to assess the value and relevance of the information. The following are factors that affect the credibility of evidence gathered from all sources: corroborating evidence, source of information, and direct interest. Corroborating evidence are those that enables the pinpointing of facts and evidences that sustain prior statements.Evidences classified as corroborating evidence gain more weight of credibility than those without verification or with sources that are independent. An example of corroborating physical evidence is a loop mark that is can be seen in the back of a child that gave a prior statement that he was hit by an extension cord. A corroborating witness is a person that verifies the prior statement of a certain person -the accused, accuser, or other witness. Source of information is more credible when it is more direct source of information that provides the foundation for a source’s opinion.Example is that when a medical doctor gives his opinion using the medical records, it serves as a more credible source than that of a caseworker’s opinion of the injury. Direct interest offers greater accuracy when the person who stated the information has not hing to lose or to gain in doing so. The worker verifying the information must seek out independent verifications of the information given by suspects(Network, 2007). Professional sources credibility also has some factors that affect it. It does not necessarily apply that because the source of the information is a professional it’s already considered as accurate.Professionals have no equal credibility in giving information thus evaluation of information given needs to be done according to the following factors: training, experience, and specialization. The more training a professional has attended the more his credibility increases when compared to a professional with no training at all. Experience in the field of scope is necessary to increase the weight of credibility of the professional. Thus, a professional with more experience in the field of interest is more credible.Increase in relevance to the subject of interest of a professional specialization also increases the pro fessional’s credibility(Network, 2007). Evidence gathered from non-professional sources needs to be verified and the factors that affect the credibility of these sources are: consistency, and plausibility. Especially if the non-professional source is the person being investigated, appropriate measures of caution should be employed. It necessitates independent verification of the evidence provided by this source or gathering of more sources.Consistent information is more credible and a plausible statement is the statement that seems true when the facts and circumstances are considered(Network, 2007). Credibility children sources are affected by the following factors: age and development of the child, plausibility, and evidence that an account of the facts has been influenced by others. The information given by an older child is greater in credibility than that of a younger child. But a younger child without exposure to sexual acts that is able to describe in detail the events that happen is more credible. In evaluating plausibility of the information from a child source the development of the child’s communication skills and abilities have to be considered. The credibility of a child’s statement is increased if other people are not present during the giving of the statement or no one is pressuring the child(Network, 2007). Credibility of the information depends on the credibility of the sources. Independent verifications of sources should be done to test the accuracy of the information. In doing interviews with a child (18 years old below) either a victim or accused their welfare should be considered first. They should not be subjected to situations that will make them more uncomfortable and will add to the burden of child abuse. 2. I will answer case vignette number 3. The indicator of abuse in case vignette number 3 is of a behavioral type in which the young woman became preoccupied and unable to study. Change in behavior is indicated in th e symptoms of child sexual abuse(MedlinePlus, 2007). The young woman was preoccupied because there was this flashback of the sexual abuse that occurred. Basically the abuse done to the woman can still be classified under the child sexual abuse category because she was abused when she was only 15 years old.The types of abuse involved are: sexual abuse by the father and neglect on the part of the mother because she even accused her daughter of seducing her own father. What will I do with the information? I will search for the name of the woman and address then maybe I could go to her and encourage her to report the abuse that was done to her. If ever that the woman can not afford to report the case to the authorities because she loves her family, I will suggest that the entire family should undergo an emotional and psychiatric treatment. The treatment is especially important to the woman victim for her to be able to move on.Maybe I can also talk to the mother so that someone can advic e her of the pain she is causing her child. Then maybe I might be able to convince her to be by the side of her daughter because in times like this a daughter can be helped much by a loving mother. The given information is not enough for me to report the case to a Child Protective Service so I need to gather more information. Other information needed in reporting cases of child abuse are: name and residence of the child/parents; age, sex, and gender of the child; name of suspect of the child abuse, and composition or profile of the family(Botash, 2007).The course of action that I will take is to report the case to the proper authorities which is the Child Protective Service because the incidence of child abuse continues to increase due to the lack of vigilance in reporting the cases. If each and every citizen will do his/her part in the reporting of these child abuse I think that it might help in decreasing the numbers of the incidence because the abusers will be afraid of the vigil ance of the people and the punishments of their crime.I also think that the case needs to be reported so that the woman can have the proper treatments, psychiatric and emotional related. What would make me decide not to take action is if the woman herself already reported the abuse. I will make my stand in the vigilance of reporting so that the repetition of the abuse by her father can be prevented and the woman will be protected against her parents that abused and neglected her. Thus no matter what happens I will report the case for the safety of the woman, and for her father to be punished if proven guilty.Works Cited Botash, A. â€Å"Child Abuse Evaluation and Treatment for Medical Providers†. The Language Of Contemporary Art - 1729 Words

Paula Rego, School for Little Witches, 2009 (Villarreal, 2016) Introduction The language of contemporary art is analysed through the system called semiotics, which is the study of signs and signifying practices. It is defined as an entity of words, images, objects and more. It was established around the nineteenth-century and is often derived from American philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce and Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure. (Hammerstingl, 2000). I have selected this drawing in particular to analyse as I am a fan of her work and it also appears very complex and elaborate. One of her many artworks â€Å"School for Little Witches†, has been drawn with pastel, conte and charcoal on paper. Paula Rego is a Portuguese contemporary artist known for her paintings and prints depicting stories from her imagination created by the fairy tales since her childhood. Her artworks are indeed very symbolic and quite disturbing as she has stated that she is interested in â€Å"the beautiful grotesque†. (Brown, 2009). The Importance Of A Women And The Hierarchy Of A Male

Literature is created to evoke the reader to form a whirlpool of ideas and emotions. One famous author that has been able to gain a vast audience is Kate Chopin. She has publish many short stories such as â€Å"Story of an Hour†,† A Pair of Silt Stockings†, â€Å"A Respectable Women†, â€Å"Desiree s Baby† and â€Å"The Storm† . These stories causes people to question whether their assumptions of a novel is correct. Two major theme that Chopin promotes throughout most of her work, is the importance of a women and the hierarchy of a male. These stories all have different story lines but share a common ground which is the admiration of a women s role in life and their constant struggles they face comparing to men. Women from all over the world are seen differently. Some are forced to marry and depend on their husband while others acknowledge their self-worth. Woman are also taught to behave in a mannerly way. The norms of a woman have already be en set, it often results women to be afraid to overcome certain life obstacles without being judge by society. Whether they suffer from self-worthiness, loneliness, impulse or lack of empowerment, women constantly struggle to be themselves and show that they too deserve happiness. Chopin often maximizes the position of a male figure in her stories. Though little information is given, the basis of a male figure often shows up in every story which influences the female protagonist to live and act a specific way. The Human Brain vs. the Computer - 1442 Words

The Human Brain vs. the Computer Over the millennia, Man has come up with countless inventions, each more ingenious than the last. However, only now, as the computer arises that mankinds sentience itself is threatened. Ridiculous, some may cry, but I say look about you! The computer has already begun to hold sway over so many of the vital functions that man has prided himself upon before. Our lives are now dependent upon the computer and what it tells you. It has been commonly said that the computer can never replace the human brain, for it is humans that created them.†¦show more content†¦The reason why computers cannot create is because of the lack of emotions. Anger allows the imagination to roam, inventing concepts of new, ever more powerful weapons of destruction. Discontent induces the mind to conceive of new methods of fulfilment that could be expanded into something more. Puzzlement causes the mind to think of solutions. Curiosity leads to attempts to satisfy it, producing new discoveries and revelations. The computer, on the other hand, though lacking in many aspects, is clearly the superior in many other aspects. In sheer speed of computation and retrieval of data, the computer is obviously by far the stronger. It has the capacity to handle things on a far grander scale than the human brain could ever conceive. The capacity to organise is massively improved as compared to the human brain. Measurements, results, applications can all be done down to the tiniest details, far beyond the human brains capabilities. Calculations can be done with an accuracy nearly impossible to achieve manually. A certain uniformity can be achieved in its functions, something a human can hardly hope to achieve. The human brain has many flaws just as it has advantages. The random mindset of the human brain gives allowance for many mistakes to be made. How important is Birlings introduction with the inspector in act 1 of An inspector calls Essay Example For Students

How important is Birlings introduction with the inspector in act 1 of An inspector calls Essay At the start of An inspector calls Mr Arthur Birling the owner of a local factory is faced with the task of dealing with his work force going on strike, as they want a pay rise. His workers demanded a rise from twenty-two and six up to twenty-five shillings a week. Birling refused to meet their demands and offered his workers their jobs back at the previous rate. This was to the majority of the workers but the ringleaders of the strike were dismissed. Miss Eva Smith was said to be one of the ringleaders and despite being a good worker she was released. The inspector tells the Birling family this information as they are celebrating the engagement of Miss Sheila Birling daughter of Arthur to Mr Gerald Croft whose family own a large company who are in the same industry as the Birlings. The inspector had came to inform the family that Miss Eva Smith had died that night and he had suspicion to believe that Mr Birling started the chain of events that lead to the downfall of Eva Smith. Mr Birling believed that he had every right to discharge her as she had disrupted his business and asked for wages that were above the standard rate. Birling is a capitalist he is only interested in the making of money. He is only interested in the well being of him and his own family. Capital means money and Birling has money invested in the economy. Mr Birlings attitude is in a huge contrast to the attitude of the inspector who reflects the opinion of Priestley. The inspector is clearly a socialist and is more interested in caring for society than making money. Priestley through Eva Smith shows how workers in and around the period of 1912 had little rights and consideration from their employers. A good example of this is when she asked for a pay rise and ended up getting sacked. The attitudes of employers towards their workers were very poor this is shown through the voice of Birling We were paying the usual rates and if they didnt like those rates, they could go and work somewhere else. Its a free country I told them. An inspector calls is set in 1912 but written in 1945 just after the Second World War had ended because this was the first election won by the labour party. This meant that the country would be run on more socialist morals, which suited socialists such as Priestley. In An inspector calls Priestley uses Birling who represents capitalism to mock the previous government and makes Birling look stupid by making him seem pompous and ignorant. In an inspector calls Birling says unsinkable, absolutely unsinkable. When commenting on the titanic which, as Priestley knew sunk on its first journey. Prior to the inspectors arrival to the home of the Birlings, Arthur is portrayed as a very pompous man. He makes several long speeches about himself and his business and seems to care more about his moneys welfare than his family. He acts portentously and makes speeches continually. He reflects his capitalist side when he says, I speak as a hard headed business man. He comes across very arrogant in some of his speeches for example just a knighthood when really it is a major honour to anybody. He has several unreliable views for example he says, The Germans dont want war. Nobody wants war ironically just two years later in 1914 the First World War starts. He said the titanic was unsinkable, absolutely unsinkable. And it sunk on its first journey. During these unreliable views that Birling expresses, Priestley uses the technique of dramatic irony making capitalism and Birling look foolish. .u634f8af93b6b5653fdc252b2c77e7170 , .u634f8af93b6b5653fdc252b2c77e7170 .postImageUrl , .u634f8af93b6b5653fdc252b2c77e7170 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u634f8af93b6b5653fdc252b2c77e7170 , .u634f8af93b6b5653fdc252b2c77e7170:hover , .u634f8af93b6b5653fdc252b2c77e7170:visited , .u634f8af93b6b5653fdc252b2c77e7170:active { border:0!important; } .u634f8af93b6b5653fdc252b2c77e7170 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u634f8af93b6b5653fdc252b2c77e7170 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u634f8af93b6b5653fdc252b2c77e7170:active , .u634f8af93b6b5653fdc252b2c77e7170:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u634f8af93b6b5653fdc252b2c77e7170 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u634f8af93b6b5653fdc252b2c77e7170 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u634f8af93b6b5653fdc252b2c77e7170 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u634f8af93b6b5653fdc252b2c77e7170 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u634f8af93b6b5653fdc252b2c77e7170:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u634f8af93b6b5653fdc252b2c77e7170 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u634f8af93b6b5653fdc252b2c77e7170 .u634f8af93b6b5653fdc252b2c77e7170-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u634f8af93b6b5653fdc252b2c77e7170:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Lady Macbeth Character EssayDuring the first section of the book just ahead of the arrival of the inspector, Birling articulates on his feeling towards community and the society he lives in. He says community and all that nonsense he thinks that people should fight for their survival and that means that they should not be helped. This is a typically capitalist comment and makes him sound the pompous and arrogant man that Priestley aimed to portray him as. He also says, a man should make his own way when talking to Gerald Croft and his son Eric. When the inspector first enters the Birlings home, he exposes Arthurs negative attitude towards his workers and all people that are of a lower class than him. The inspector says its better top ask for the earth, than to take It. When they talk about Eva Smith and the workers asking for a salary increase. This comment undermines Birlings authority and is from here on offended by the inspector. When Birling says, If they didnt like those rates, they could go and work somewhere else. Eric then also undermines his father and the inspector once more as he agrees with Eric. The atmosphere and lighting change dramatically when Birling and the inspector have disputes. Birling does not accept any of the responsibility that is directed towards him over the death of Eva Smith. He defends himself sharply and sounds guilty, as he is desperate to protect his innocence. Birling exclaims, I cant accept any responsibility. This shows he feels no sympathy or regret towards the death of Eva Smith. He admits that when Eva Smith did work for him she was a very good worker and was ready to be promoted he says A good worker too ready to promote to leading operator. He admits that the only reason that she was sacked is that she was one of the leaders of the strike. Birling expected that Eva Smith became a prostitute when she left his workforce. Birling says, Get into trouble? Go on the streets As this is what people thought would happen to a stereotypical young lower classed woman during that period. They were expected to live on the streets and get money through prostitution. Priestley through the questioning from the inspector shows that Birling shows no remorse towards the poor way he treats his workers. Birling shows no concern for them when replying to the fact that he did not increase the workers wages he says, Well, its my duty to keep labour costs down. He pays his workers only average wages and shows no concern whether it is enough for them to survive on or not. When speaking about the actual event of the strike he says Pitiful affair. Well, we let them all come back at the old rates. As he continues replying about the refusal to increase wages he claims, If you dont come down sharply on some of these people, theyd soon be asking for the earth. To which the inspector retorts But after all its better to ask for the earth than to take it. This indicates that no matter whom Birling knows i.e. inspector colonel Roberts, he will not be intimidated. The attitude of Mr Gerald Croft is very similar to Birling, as he has been brought up as a capitalist as he works in industry. He also wants to support his to be father in law. Gerald backs up Birling on several points during the investigation for example on the pay strike. After listening to one of Birlings speeches he replies, You couldnt of done anything else. He also backs Birling up in saying, Not if it was after the holidays. Theyd all be broke- if I know them. .ubbe75859b2d9ee51af99d74193b4ede8 , .ubbe75859b2d9ee51af99d74193b4ede8 .postImageUrl , .ubbe75859b2d9ee51af99d74193b4ede8 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ubbe75859b2d9ee51af99d74193b4ede8 , .ubbe75859b2d9ee51af99d74193b4ede8:hover , .ubbe75859b2d9ee51af99d74193b4ede8:visited , .ubbe75859b2d9ee51af99d74193b4ede8:active { border:0!important; } .ubbe75859b2d9ee51af99d74193b4ede8 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ubbe75859b2d9ee51af99d74193b4ede8 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ubbe75859b2d9ee51af99d74193b4ede8:active , .ubbe75859b2d9ee51af99d74193b4ede8:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ubbe75859b2d9ee51af99d74193b4ede8 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ubbe75859b2d9ee51af99d74193b4ede8 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ubbe75859b2d9ee51af99d74193b4ede8 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ubbe75859b2d9ee51af99d74193b4ede8 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ubbe75859b2d9ee51af99d74193b4ede8:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ubbe75859b2d9ee51af99d74193b4ede8 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ubbe75859b2d9ee51af99d74193b4ede8 .ubbe75859b2d9ee51af99d74193b4ede8-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ubbe75859b2d9ee51af99d74193b4ede8:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Macbeth Essay - DuncanArthur Birlings son Eric does not support his father on many of the disputes. He is part of the younger generation and has not yet learnt to be fully capitalist or socialist and is very influenced by the inspector and agrees with him for the most part. Eric says, Why shouldnt they try for higher wages? We try for the highest possible prices. He also challenges his father by saying, it isnt if you cant go and work somewhere else. Workers and lower class citizens were treated badly during the early 1900s and this is shown clearly in An Inspector Calls. Mr Birling has no consideration or pity for his workers. He pays them the bare minimum they can survive on. He has no respect for them. He claims their strike was a disgrace and they are not normal respectable citizens by saying Pitiful affair. Well, we let them all come back- at the old rates. Sheila Birling was the second part of the chain of events and once Eva Smith got a job a Millwards, Sheila went into the shop to buy a hat and the hat looked well on Eva who was working as an assistant. Sheila was enraged, and jealous that Eva was prettier. Eva laughed when she saw the hat on Sheila, so Sheila demanded that Eva was sacked and if she wasnt that the Birlings would close their account at the shop. Gerald led on the chain of events when he rescued the unemployed Eva from a local bar, where the local alderman was drunk and trying to exploit Eva. He took Eva back to his apartment and let her stay there for a while. She was happy but they knew that the relationship could not go on so Gerald asked her to leave; at least Eva was happy for a while. Sybil was the next part and had the best opportunity of saving Eva from her downfall. Eva went to an association, that is designed to help women in need, where Sybil Birling is the chairwoman and requested help. Eva was pregnant and in desperate need of help. She claimed her surname was Birling and Sybil knew she was lying so had an immediate prejudice against her. She refused to give any aid to her. Eric is the last person for the inspector to investigate and he had a love affair with Eva Smith and gave her money, which is later found to be stolen. He helps her survive but when she realises it is stolen money she refuses it. The events took place prior to Eva requesting help from Mrs Birling association. Eva used the surname Birling as she had just finished her affair with Eric Birling. The reader is led to believe that Eric has made Eva pregnant. After the book the audience are made to think that socialism is right as opposed to capitalism. This is because socialism is portrayed in a good way and the characters that capitalism are arrogant and ostentatious.

Specific Phobia 1 Essays - Phobias, Psychiatry, Psychology

Specific Phobia 1 Specific Phobia Kayliegh Klitz Boylan High School Specific Phobia 2 There are three different categories that phobias fit into. Social phobia , which is the fear of coming into contact with people and having to talk to them. Panic disor ders, where a person experiences a paralyzing fear for no reason at all. Lastly, specific phobia, which is a specific fear of any object or place. Out of the three categories the easiest to understand and treat is specific phobia. Each specific phobia can be fit into one of four categories which are the fear of insects and animals, natural environments, blood or injury, and dangerous situations. It is normal to have fears of certain things, but when it starts to get in the way of everyday life is when it becomes a problem. Many people claim to have a specific phobia of some kind but are usually wrong. Four requirements must be met to prove you have a phobia: maladaptive, unjustifiable, disturbing, and atypical. Maladaptive can be hurting oneself or others, unjustifiable means there is no reason for the fear, disturbing is when it bothers others, and atypical violates a norm because it is so different. T o overcome a phobia a person can go through exposure therapy, use virtual-reality programs, or use medications. The most common of the three is exposure therapy. The way exposure therapy works is a patient exposed slowly to the object or situation that is feared. When the patient becomes to overwhelmed a psychiatrist will have the patient perform a relaxing exercise, which is going to their "happy place" or doing something that they love. Virtual-reality programs is exposing the patient to the fear safely and slowly the patient will stop fearing it. Medications are used to help a person stop thinking and forget about their fear before it gets out of control. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration have recently approved an anti-depressant drug, Paxil, this is the first drug approved for phobias. Anxiety Disorders Association of America holds seminars to help people get over their phobias and spot them in children.
